On Sunday, January 11, Mercury turns retrograde, which means in relation to planet Earth it appears to be going backwards (which it never does in reality). Whenever Mercury "appears" to go backward, we say it's retrograde. When it's retrograde, all the things Mercury rules get screwed up. Mercury rules ground transportation, the mail, all communications and many daily little activities. Although the retrograde is over by February 1, Mercury does not reach the place where it was when it first started to go backwards until Feb 21. In other words, it has to catch up the distance it lost when it went backward. Capice? Therefore, if you're making a serious purchase like a car, I'd wait until Feb. 21. (I hate to say these things but it's my job.) Oy vey.
Each time Mercury goes retrograde, it occurs in a different sign, which means it hits a different part of your chart. This particular Mercury retrograde -- the first of 2009 -- is going to bring you back in contact with old friends, and members of clubs, groups and organizations that you might've belonged to before. You might still belong to these groups and suddenly old faces show up. Other old faces you will encounter will be previous bosses, teachers, parents and authority figures in your life. This could be interesting -- or not. But generally, it's fun to encounter past acquaintances. Unless of course, you are the one who has gained the most weight. (Horrors!)
It's an interesting ride this month because this Mercury retrograde occurs at high noon in your chart. You'll encounter bosses and authority figures from the past. Some might talk to parents you haven't seen for a while. But as Mercury continues to go backwards, it starts to stir up past acquaintances from other countries and different cultures. You might also find you're embroiled in old law suits or past legal matters. (Grrr.) Something to do with higher education, medicine and law might also need to be rehashed. It's not all bad. You can finish old business quickly when Mercury is retrograde.
Since Mercury is your ruler, you generally feel the Mercury retrograde more than most. ("Where are my keys? I know I left my hat right here!") This particular Mercury retrograde might be useful for you because it ultimately stirs up issues with shared property, insurance matters, inheritances, taxes and debt. Although you might not want to address these issues ("I'm not speaking to you"), in fact, this is a very easy time to wrap up loose ends in these areas. When Mercury is retrograde and you try to finish something, it finishes with great speed! That's because Mercury wants to go "backwards" into your life. Where we have trouble is when we try to go forward, as in, "Don't tell me we have a flat!"
You might enjoy this Mercury retrograde! No sign more than you loves the past, which is why you have at least one camera in your lifetime (to capture the past.) It's also why you're sentimental about old things and can't tjrow stuff out. This Mercury retrograde will put you in touch with ex-partners and old friends from the past. Naturally, the ex-partners bit could be dubious, depending on how you ended the relationship. But let's face it -- you never really get go. Therefore, you'll be intrigued to check out how they look and how they're doing. You know they're missing your TLC and cooking. Oh yeah. (Riff of Connie Francis singing "Who's Sorry Now?")
This first Mercury retrograde of the year starts off directly opposite your sign, which is Aquarius, and then Mercury slips back into Capricorn. For some this will trigger contact with ex-partners but, more likely, most of you will (gee, I hate to say this) suffer from all kinds of silly, goofy mistakes at work. Expect mixed-up communications, wrong messages, errors in paperwork, staff shortages, missed deadlines, lost packages and papers, misplaced items and broken equipment. Yes, this is the bummer part. The good part (and there is a good part) is that you can finish whatever is on your plate that has been nagging you so quickly you'll wonder why you were ever procrastinating about it in the first place. Zip! Done!
Like Gemini, you're ruled by Mercury and, like Gemini, you feel each Mercury retrograde more than the other signs. However, unlike Gemini, you'll suffer less because you're less scattered. Even if you don't appear organized, you know where everything is. And you rarely spread yourself too thin. This Mercury retrograde will bring you back into contact with old flames and past loves. You might be dealing with old issues to do with your children. It could also create delays and snafus with vacations, sports, and anything to do with the entertainment world or the hospitality industry. However, creative Virgos can now finish their magnum opus or Oscar-winning screenplay.
You are well-advised to stock the fridge because this particular Mercury retrograde will attract relatives you didn't even know you had to your doorstep. People might be camped out on your sofa, eating you out of house and home. On the other hand, this is a classic time for a family reunion, since they're headed to your place anyway. Real-estate deals might be stalled in the water; ditto for home renovations and repairs. However, jobs that were already in the mix might be finished more quickly! (A fine line here.) Genealogists will make wonderful progress. You will find it very easy to track down old data about your family tree. Or shrub, depending on how prominent your family was.
This particular Mercury retrograde is really going to hit you where you live, because the part of your chart through which it moves backwards is actually its own home. Oh no! Oh yes! We're talking ground transportation, daily communications, mail, phone calls, e-mails, podcasts, smart phones, dumb phones and surely we have to include fax machines. Pay your phone bill. Charge your cell phone. Stay on top of your car (not literally) and be prepared for anything that might go wrong, because if there is a weakness in your transportation scene, this is where it will hit you. Allow extra time for everything -- errands, visits and small trips. Just expect these snafus to occur and be reassured that they are generally relatively minor. Fingers crossed.
Stay on top of your money scene this month. Make friends with your bank account. Find out how much money you don't have. It's easy for errors to occur in handling cash. Check bills, invoices and tabs. Count your change. Guard against loss of possessions and money. However, you might find something you lost, or resurrect a previously failed attempt to earn money; perhaps this time it will fly? Some will return to work at places you worked once before. In a nutshell, old money and financial opportunities are worth trying again but new financial opportunities will probably be delayed or impeded or just be a dumb idea. Good luck!
Retrograde Mercury returns to Capricorn on Jan. 20 and stays there until Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. ("Whaaat? I never asked for this! I'm innocent!") Therefore, like Aquarius, you will be dealing with ex-partners, running into old friends, and definitely suffering from what appears to be a foggy brain. Misplaced items, forgotten conversations, cancelled appointments, lost possessions, and silly little errors in your daily tasks will dog your footsteps. Not only is it frustrating, but you get the feeling that you're losing it. Just remember: All this is temporary. This, too, shall pass. (Especially if you drink lots of water.)
This particular Mercury retrograde, the first of four Mercury retrogrades to occur in 2009, takes place in your sign. You can practically count on having to deal with ex-partners once again. To prepare for this event, do whatever you can to look great at all times because living well is the best revenge. Your cavalier demeanour will remind them of what they're missing. What fools these mortals be! It's not so much about rubbing it in another person, it's more about feeling confident in your own skin. And having no regrets. The upside is you can finish things you already started. Wrapping up stuff goes quickly. However, if you're initiating a new venture, best to wait until February and better yet to wait until February 21.
Expect to run into old faces from your past. (Everyone always fakes surprised delight, even though you never think of each other. Invariably, this is followed by polite inquiries into details of family but do people really care?) However, most of this Mercury retrograde will dredge up memories of the past and make you second-guess what you did before and what you're thinking of doing now. This can be unsettling. It's not a process that encourages confidence and perseverance. Therefore, wait until mid-February before you begin anything really major. This also applies to buying a car or truck. Buying shoes is another thing. You have fantastic taste in footwear and must grab a bargain whenever you see it!
