"A fellow oughtn't to let his family property go to pieces."

Anthony Trollope (April 24, 1815 - 1882)

Introduction

Boo-hoo. The year 2013 marks the end, in our lifetime, of those fun dates like 02.02.02 or 12.12.12 (Really cool birthdays.) It does, however, mark the beginning of new cycles and trends. If we look back to when these cycles occurred before, we might see a pattern.

Saturn is now in Scorpio until 2016. The sign Scorpio is all about sex, secrets, the police, the criminal element, the world of spies, medicine, plumbing, manufacturing, nuclear fission, television, and it has a strong link to the military. Saturn is about the government, form and structure, plus rules and regulations.

The last time Saturn was in Scorpio was 1984-86 when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, AIDS was discovered, Apple released the first MAC computer, Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman to run as a Vice President running mate, Nintendo was released, the Challenger exploded after take off, the Chernobyl disaster occurred and FOX network began.

When Saturn entered Scorpio in October 2012, within weeks, the media was filled with the Petraeus scandal about the illicit sexual activities of a four-star general who was head of the CIA. A movie waiting to happen!

It's safe to assume this year we can expect a heavier focus on crime prevention. Politics might become more ruthless (if that is possible). Medical systems will be tested and found wanting.

Meanwhile Uranus continues in Aries until 2019. The previous two times when Uranus was in Aries was in 1843-1850 (the California Gold Rush) and 1927-1935 when the price of gold almost doubled.

Neptune is in its own sign of Pisces until 2025. Neptune is glamour! Pisces rules the feet. An interesting manifestation of this is shoe fashions: Look around! More than ever before we see shoes and boots that are over the top. (And over the knee.) Imaginative, high-fashion styles, which until recently were confined to Paris runways, are now on our everyday streets worn by (sometimes limping) eager women. Shoe sellers can be confident this trend will last for the next decade.

Neptune's striving for idealism will permeate society, politics and the arts. Neptune is all about illusion and rules the medium of moving film (a huge illusion). There will be an increase in 3-D movies and television as well as optical inventions and the use of holographic images - perhaps 3-D action happening in the middle of your living room!

Live faces will pop up in e-mails and phone calls as the visual becomes just as important as the content. (Wow, you'll have to be dressed to answer your phone.)

All of Me

You read newspapers. (That's because you like history and today's news is current history.) You also love your creature comforts: good food, good wine, good sex and a cozy home (preferably full of antiques and mortgage-free). You're the financial wizard of the zodiac. You make money and save it! You appreciate quality. One stop shopping is not your style; you shop around for the best bread, fish, meat and apple pie. You appreciate real wood, pewter, silver and gold. Taurus rules the throat, hence your lovely voice. You're the most tactile sign in the zodiac. (No scratchy labels for you!) It pleases you to discuss politics in garden settings with delicious refreshments. (You're a country squire at heart.) Hey, whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to shop! Nevertheless, cash in the bank is what really makes you feel secure.

I Did It My Way

You were riding high in the early '90s, but you gave up a lot a few years later. Perhaps this is why your life changed so dramatically around 1999 when Jupiter in your sign really expanded your world. In the next few years, the money flowed (how sweet that was) but between 2003-06, job changes and residential moves upset your Wa. You expanded your family or took a fabulous vacation in 2003-04. (You love vacations because you can kick up your heels, knowing everything is just as you left it back home.) You had to secure your home base by buying or repairing where you lived in 2006-2009. Since 2010, you've been busting your buns to show the world what you could do.

It Was a Very Good Year

In this last year, your hard work began to pay off because you explored ways to boost your income. Some of you made substantial purchases that made you feel proud or more comfortable or more "with it." ("I'm so hot.") And again, many of you took a wonderful vacation or became more involved in sports events, playful activities with children and romantic affairs. There was a strong competitive edge to things but basically, you were intent on enjoying life. (Hey, except for your hard work, it was not a year of self-denial, was it?)

From This Moment On

The year 2013 is a turning point for you, perhaps the biggest since 1999. For the last 14 years, despite vacations, romance and hard work, your growth was primarily personal. You redefined yourself and wrestled with values and residential moves, struggling to show the world what you could do. Well, that 14-year journey has ended. For the first time since 1984, you will start to attract attention and garner praise from the world around you. ("I can fly!") You're going to push out into the world more boldly because you are finally starting to see that brass ring gleaming in the future. (But first, a little nosh.)

Nice Work If You Can Get It

There's something you need to know right away about this coming year. You're entering a time when you will definitely get recognition for your efforts. It's as if you've been in the wings for the last 14 years, and suddenly, you're stepping out onto centre stage. Ta-da! But it's not all easy street. Yes, you will begin to get more recognition but, at the same time, co-workers and bosses will make greater demands on you. As their admiration for your efforts increases, they will expect more. This is why you will feel overworked, discouraged and physically tired. ("I'm getting old.") You will have to defend yourself from the demands of others who ask you to work too hard or over-commit. If you don't take care of yourself, you'll be of no use to anyone, right? Do the best you can do and be happy with that. That's all you can do. You can't be all things to all people all the time. Einstein said, "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you have to keep moving."

The Very Thought of You

You are the most tactile, sensuous sign in the zodiac. You're a desirable lover because you know how to give and receive pleasure. (And you have a great bedroom voice.) This year is a turning point for relationships because it's the first time since the mid-80s that Saturn is in your House of Marriage. Saturn always tests reality! This means relationships that are shaky will end. And relationships that are meant to endure will undergo readjustments. Factoid. Why is this happening? It's happening because you're flexing your muscles! You're changing! Your growing confidence and focus on your external world threatens the status quo of existing relationships. Money will not be an issue because your earnings are gaining. Even your optimism is strong. But you are upsetting the existing balance of things. (How dare you?) Singles will start to attract stronger partners simply because they themselves are stronger. Even though some relationships end, ironically, marriage is in the cards for some because they feel ready for commitment. (Ah yes, marriage is our last chance to grow up.)

For Once in My Life

In the next decade, your view of the world will change. It won't happen quickly. (Likely, something will force this change.) Your interest in profound subjects, including religion, will deepen. You'll be less concerned with what your mind grasps and more concerned with experiences, mystical or philosophical. These new experiences will be so profound, you'll try to persuade others to embrace your new way of thinking. Sudden disclosures of secrets might also affect you. One secret might be your own acceptance about who you are. You'll also discover the power of positive thinking this year by literally experiencing it. Relations with others will be upbeat. You'll be excited and enthusiastic about expanding your horizons, possibly through travel. Certainly your plans for the future are bigger, sexier and ambitious! And yes, when you start to think like a winner you become one.

How Deep is the Ocean?

The reason you're becoming stronger (to the point of threatening existing relationships) is your ambition is growing. Starting this year, you begin a journey that culminates around 2020. That will be your time of harvest. And please note - in 2015-2016, you can take advantage of real-estate opportunities because this will be an excellent time to invest in property or change residences. It is also the classic time to expand your family through marriage or birth. Oh my, such riches await you!

Taurus Mantra for 2013

"My belief in what I can do is the biggest thing shaping my future."

Mercury Retrograde in 2013

Mercury retrograde times are frustrating. They generally occur three times a year for about six-to-eight weeks causing delays, transportation breakdowns, mixed-up communications, missed appointments, lost paper work, misplaced items, computer crashes and server problems. Oy! Newspapers, courier services, the Post Office, accounting firms and service industries get hurt the worst. Furthermore, each Mercury retrograde has its own flavour because it occurs in a different sign.

But they can also be used properly if you're smart. In a nutshell, just avoid some things and try to do others.

What to avoid: Avoid shopping for ground transportation like cars, trucks or bikes. Avoid shopping for items related to communications like phones, answering machines, computers and printers. I get mail asking if it's OK to buy a sofa or a washer or dryer... yes, it is.

What to do: Charge your cell phone. Pay your phone bill. Keep gas in the car and a working flashlight. Smile a lot. You will suffer from delays! Try to anticipate these and do some damage control ahead of time. Tackle repairs. (These will go surprisingly smoothly.) Clean out closets, drawers, desks and cupboards. Finish projects. Do research into the past. Study anything. Contact people from your past. Re-apply for a job. Try to get something you wanted before that fell through. Try again! Organize old photographs. Finish that "to do" list. It is easier to deal with the past than go forward into the future.

There are two sets of dates below: The actual time of Mercury retrograde is on the left. But Mercury slows down ahead of time, and then takes a long time to "catch up" to where it was when it first went retrograde. These longer time periods are on the right. When buying pricey transportation or a computer, I recommend respecting the dates on the right.
