"Seventy per cent of success is just showing up."

Woody Allen (b. Dec.1, 1935)

Introduction

Boo-hoo. The year 2013 marks the end, in our lifetime, of those fun dates like 02.02.02 or 12.12.12 (Really cool birthdays.) It does, however, mark the beginning of new cycles and trends. If we look back to when these cycles occurred before, we might see a pattern.

Saturn is now in Scorpio until 2016. The sign Scorpio is all about sex, secrets, the police, the criminal element, the world of spies, medicine, plumbing, manufacturing, nuclear fission, television, and it has a strong link to the military. Saturn is about the government, form and structure, plus rules and regulations.

The last time Saturn was in Scorpio was 1984-86 when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, AIDS was discovered, Apple released the first MAC computer, Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman to run as a Vice President running mate, Nintendo was released, the Challenger exploded after take off, the Chernobyl disaster occurred and FOX network began.

When Saturn entered Scorpio in October 2012, within weeks, the media was filled with the Petraeus scandal about the illicit sexual activities of a four-star general who was head of the CIA. A movie waiting to happen!

It's safe to assume this year we can expect a heavier focus on crime prevention. Politics might become more ruthless (if that is possible). Medical systems will be tested and found wanting.

Meanwhile Uranus continues in Aries until 2019. The previous two times when Uranus was in Aries was in 1843-1850 (the California Gold Rush) and 1927-1935 when the price of gold almost doubled.

Neptune is in its own sign of Pisces until 2025. Neptune is glamour! Pisces rules the feet. An interesting manifestation of this is shoe fashions: Look around! More than ever before we see shoes and boots that are over the top. (And over the knee.) Imaginative, high-fashion styles, which until recently were confined to Paris runways, are now on our everyday streets worn by (sometimes limping) eager women. Shoe sellers can be confident this trend will last for the next decade.

Neptune's striving for idealism will permeate society, politics and the arts. Neptune is all about illusion and rules the medium of moving film (a huge illusion). There will be an increase in 3-D movies and television as well as optical inventions and the use of holographic images - perhaps 3-D action happening in the middle of your living room!

Live faces will pop up in e-mails and phone calls as the visual becomes just as important as the content. (Wow, you'll have to be dressed to answer your phone.)

All of Me

People love you because you're friendly, breezy and positive. (Either that or you fake it very well.) Freedom and activity are survival issues for you. You adore travel and are enthusiastic about learning because you want to constantly grow and expand your horizons. You're future-oriented and physically active. You're an outdoor enthusiast who loves animals, especially big animals like horses. (Pity about the mastodon.) You're a blatant pleasure seeker and gambler. You do everything big. You work hard and party hard! We'll find you at universities, publishing houses, sports events, casinos, airports, ranches and corporate boardrooms. You are the philosopher of the zodiac. You have wisdom, blunt honesty, and can sell anyone the Brooklyn Bridge because you dazzle others with your words.

I Did It My Way

The early '90s were a blur because many of you were sofa-surfing trying to find your digs or the right job. By the mid-'90s, you tried to settle down; in fact, around 1994-95, lovely opportunities came your way. By 1998-2000, some of you expanded your family or felt richer at home. But 2001-04 was challenging for partnerships. Definitely! (Although professionally you were looking good.) During the window of 2005-2008, travel and higher education were important. In fact, lovely opportunities to expand your world existed in 2006. "Wish you were here!" By 2008-09, you really hit your stride and felt proud. This was a time of graduation, promotions, marriage or something that was very special to you. A dream come true.

It Was a Very Good Year

Last year, partnerships were blessed, which is a good thing because your ambition was aroused, which meant you were sidetracked by a multitude of projects. In some ways, 2012 represented a culmination of your life. You felt successful in many areas but more than that, you felt satisfied! (Nothing satisfies like satisfaction.) This made you confident about taking big ideas and pushing them from the abstract into the concrete. "It's a go!" This kind of success was especially possible if you worked with partners because their help definitely increased your overall productivity.

From This Moment On

You are heading into an entirely different situation where you will dismantle much of what you created since 2001. You have structured your life financially, physically, socially and emotionally in certain ways, and now you see it needs to change. Inevitably, these changes require giving up things, which is why you'll give up homes, possessions, relationships and even places. This transition is a preparation for a whole new cycle beginning around 2018. You might not know yet what it will be - but you'll be packed and ready!

Nice Work If You Can Get It

There is no question you have a lot on your plate now because last year, you were ambitious for so long (almost a driving ambition). Obviously, this led to something. Furthermore, your ability to benefit from partnerships and working units with others continues into this year. There's also no question of that. Plus, as the year wears on - especially in the autumn and winter - you will more easily get financial support from others or your partner will make more money. (In fact, this increasing support from others, especially partners, grows stronger in 2014.) But (and you can hear this coming), you are letting go of so much right now, it's hard to see what direction your job will take. But know this: The winds of change are blowing. Even if you don't know it, there's a strong chance you will be changing jobs or residences or making a shift, even if right now you don't see it. Older Sagittarians can harken back to 1983-85 when you last felt this influence.

The Very Thought of You

You're not one to commit quickly to someone because you value your freedom. You keep a bead on where the back door is. But sometimes you fall for someone unsuitable and with blind faith convince yourself it will work. (Many Sagittarians have starter marriages.) You need a partner who is also your best friend and someone who respects your need for freedom. And this year this could happen. Why? Because you're at loose ends! You're a gambler and when there is little to lose why not give something a try? Your sex drive, especially later in the year and well into next year, will be super-amped. (The tail wagging the dog?) Some of you have recently left relationships (or you will) as part of this process of letting go, which means you are free to explore new territory. In the next seven years, many of you will have impulsive and shocking love affairs. (Oh yeah.) Would I kid you?

For Once in My Life

The next seven years might be the most exciting time of your life because you will actively seek out a variety of new amusements and recreations. Sudden vacations might introduce you to a new world. You could be attracted to unusual sexual relationships, perhaps of an age difference or involving dramatic cultural differences. You'll be more creative, innovative and original in everything you do related to the arts, design or the entertainment world. Your relations with children will undergo a revolution. And at the end of this thrilling time, you will feel younger, more refreshed and ready for what life has to offer. It's your positive frame of mind and belief in a better tomorrow that gives you strength and makes you attractive to others.

How Deep is the Ocean?

I have always suspected Sagittarians are lucky. How does one explain that although you're giving up a lot in the next few years, by late 2018, just when you're branching out on a new path, you're a success story! Everyone wants to sit at your table. Is this beginners luck? I think not. You'll work hard for your goals and by 2019, you'll be laughing. Your world will change so much even your daily wardrobe will be different. Wow.

Sagittarius Mantra for 2013

"Letting go is not loss - it's freedom!"

Mercury Retrograde in 2013

Mercury retrograde times are frustrating. They generally occur three times a year for about six-to-eight weeks causing delays, transportation breakdowns, mixed-up communications, missed appointments, lost paper work, misplaced items, computer crashes and server problems. Oy! Newspapers, courier services, the Post Office, accounting firms and service industries get hurt the worst. Furthermore, each Mercury retrograde has its own flavour because it occurs in a different sign.

But they can also be used properly if you're smart. In a nutshell, just avoid some things and try to do others.

What to avoid: Avoid shopping for ground transportation like cars, trucks or bikes. Avoid shopping for items related to communications like phones, answering machines, computers and printers. I get mail asking if it's OK to buy a sofa or a washer or dryer... yes, it is.

What to do: Charge your cell phone. Pay your phone bill. Keep gas in the car and a working flashlight. Smile a lot. You will suffer from delays! Try to anticipate these and do some damage control ahead of time. Tackle repairs. (These will go surprisingly smoothly.) Clean out closets, drawers, desks and cupboards. Finish projects. Do research into the past. Study anything. Contact people from your past. Re-apply for a job. Try to get something you wanted before that fell through. Try again! Organize old photographs. Finish that "to do" list. It is easier to deal with the past than go forward into the future.

There are two sets of dates below: The actual time of Mercury retrograde is on the left. But Mercury slows down ahead of time, and then takes a long time to "catch up" to where it was when it first went retrograde. These longer time periods are on the right. When buying pricey transportation or a computer, I recommend respecting the dates on the right.
