2010: A time of Testing for Civil Liberties

This year, three changes in the heavens portend a conflict in society. We're talking about Pluto, Uranus, and Saturn. Roughly at this time, all three are making a shift from one sign to another.

Pluto takes 250 years to go through all 12 signs. (Yikes!) Pluto represents the impulse to tear things down to make them better: refinish furniture, renovate a house, destroy a nation to rebuild it.

(Sidebar: I don't believe the planets are actually causal. How could they be? But it's easier to speak as if they are. To me, astrology is a patterning of knowledge, a language for us to "read." The planets simply yield information about what is happening: as above, so below.)

Pluto rules nations. And right now, for the first time in 250 years, Pluto is at the beginning of its journey though Capricorn, the sign that rules governments. The last time it was in Capricorn was from 1763 to 1778 when the American Revolution culminated in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Now Pluto is back in Capricorn. Specifically, it returned in November 2008, when the election of the first black president of the United States stunned the world.

Uranus represents a "pushing boundaries" drive for freedom. The last time Pluto in Capricorn occurred at the same time as Uranus was in Aries, was 1760-1767. (That was when the battle that brought Canada under British rule happened.)

Meanwhile, here come de judge! Every 30 years, Saturn has a two-year stint in Libra. Saturn rules the courts, and Libra rules the law. The last time Saturn was in Libra was 1980-83, a time of economic recession and inflation.

So here we are.

Capricorn's desire for efficiency and order will encourage laws that restrict the freedom of the individual so that governments can efficiently deal with the masses. (Its impulse will be to install a computer chip with ID and a GPS in the heel of every newborn.) "Then we know who everyone is, and where they are!" Naturally, this flies in the face of Uranus' drive for individual freedom.

In the coming decade, struggles will ensue. Pluto in Capricorn will try to get everyone so tidily organized, we're rank-and-file. Meanwhile, revolutionary impulses will fight conservative values that threaten individual civil liberties, and Saturn in Libra will weigh the "fairness" of each case.

There is a move to world order.

Hello 2010!

About six-seven years ago, you felt proud. That's because Jupiter was in your sign boosting your confidence and increasing your sense of self poise. (Everybody loves Jupiter to visit their sign but it happens only once every 12 years.) Nevertheless, this year, Jupiter is sitting 180° opposite your sign, and that's good, too! You embarked on a new 12-year cycle of learning six years ago, and now you will experience a sense of culmination. Things are blossoming! You're enthusiastic about growing something: a business, a home, or a family. You have high hopes for the future! Your Illustrious Job and Reputation

As far back as 1986, and certainly around 1994, you started to gain momentum to achieve what probably arrived around 2001-03. You were going for it and you got what you wanted. This could have been a promotion, a better job, a time of graduation, a marriage, or finally having a child. But it was something you wanted to achieve. Then around 2005-07, many of you had to move, or give up people, places, and possessions because you opened an entirely new chapter of your life. "I'm in a new movie!" Now you're working just as hard on your inner development as you are on your external success. And you're aware of this. What you might not be aware of is the extent to which some recognition will probably come your way, starting this year. We're talking about the proverbial light under a bushel. This biblical reference is all about not hiding your talents. Furthermore, not only not hiding them but using them for your own good and for the benefit of others. This is what you have an opportunity to do in 2010.

Money - The Second Most Important Thing

Your financial scene is a bit tight now. You're busting your buns for every cent you get. But at a deeper level, what's happening is you're learning what really matters. After all, the material things you own in the world are simply a reflection of your inner values. Right? The best approach to your immediate future is to reduce your debt, and to stay out of debt as much as possible. This is challenging in a society of easy credit, advertising and marketing. "You, too, can be happy! Buy me!" In particular, be wary of authority figures. As your confidence increases now (and this is definitely happening) authority figures could feel threatened.

Nevertheless, if you keep an eye on your debt, and you continue to work hard, you can acquire possessions, cash, and increased social prestige this year. You just have to be clever about it. Fortunately, you're always clever. In astrology, Virgo is associated with discriminating intelligence. Ahh so.

Heartthrob Moments

When it comes to partnerships and relationships this year, you shine! Wonderful things will grow and delight you with your closest friendships, your main squeeze, as well as your professional partnerships. It's as if you finally believe that something that was shaky is now on solid ground. Because these significant relationships are a source of joy, you see them with a new appreciation. The more you appreciate this person, the more they feel it! (Hey, they certainly feel criticism.) So it's a vicious circle: You admire and appreciate your partner in your life, and they continue to amaze you by becoming more and more like you want them to be. It's magical!

Naturally, this is the real world. We're frail mortals. We all have faults. So nothing is going to be perfect. But I guarantee you that your relations with others will be more joyful, more satisfying, and more productive. You might hook up with someone from a different country or a different background. New commitments will be with someone who is older, richer, or more established. (Caution: If you marry for money you will surely earn it!)

Home Suite Home

For various reasons, (the details differ according to your specific life) you have more energy and ambition to do things where you live, and even to help other family members. Some years we have energy to do these things; some years we don't. This is one of the productive years! Many of you will be moving furniture, or doing renovations, or tweaking the place, or trying to get better organized, or all of the above.

Part of this burst of enthusiasm is because you're getting more recognition for what you do from the general public, from partners and close friends, and from almost anyone you meet. It's as if you're coming out! Actually, in about three years, your opportunities will be totally fabulous. Since your focus is going to be more and more on your external world, use this time now to build closeness within your family. And also to give yourself a home that is a peaceful, attractive refuge. (Why not?)

Your Inner Wah

You can make some strides this year with respect to your inner world because many of you will find that a partner or close friend will have a consciousness-expanding effect on you. You might share some classes together. You might read books to each other. You might undergo a similar experience, and when you compare notes, it's thought-provoking! ("You went to the store today? So did I!")

This year will definitely be a meaningful, productive growth experience. Some kind of consciousness-expanding event or influence will occur. Who knows? You might be able to play the tuba by December.
