2010: A time of Testing for Civil Liberties

This year, three changes in the heavens portend a conflict in society. We're talking about Pluto, Uranus, and Saturn. Roughly at this time, all three are making a shift from one sign to another.

Pluto takes 250 years to go through all 12 signs. (Yikes!) Pluto represents the impulse to tear things down to make them better: refinish furniture, renovate a house, destroy a nation to rebuild it.

(Sidebar: I don't believe the planets are actually causal. How could they be? But it's easier to speak as if they are. To me, astrology is a patterning of knowledge, a language for us to "read." The planets simply yield information about what is happening: as above, so below.)

Pluto rules nations. And right now, for the first time in 250 years, Pluto is at the beginning of its journey though Capricorn, the sign that rules governments. The last time it was in Capricorn was from 1763 to 1778 when the American Revolution culminated in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Now Pluto is back in Capricorn. Specifically, it returned in November 2008, when the election of the first black president of the United States stunned the world.

Uranus represents a "pushing boundaries" drive for freedom. The last time Pluto in Capricorn occurred at the same time as Uranus was in Aries, was 1760-1767. (That was when the battle that brought Canada under British rule happened.)

Meanwhile, here come de judge! Every 30 years, Saturn has a two-year stint in Libra. Saturn rules the courts, and Libra rules the law. The last time Saturn was in Libra was 1980-83, a time of economic recession and inflation.

So here we are.

Capricorn's desire for efficiency and order will encourage laws that restrict the freedom of the individual so that governments can efficiently deal with the masses. (Its impulse will be to install a computer chip with ID and a GPS in the heel of every newborn.) "Then we know who everyone is, and where they are!" Naturally, this flies in the face of Uranus' drive for individual freedom.

In the coming decade, struggles will ensue. Pluto in Capricorn will try to get everyone so tidily organized, we're rank-and-file. Meanwhile, revolutionary impulses will fight conservative values that threaten individual civil liberties, and Saturn in Libra will weigh the "fairness" of each case.

There is a move to world order.

(I'm going to clean my bedroom closet.)

Hello 2010!

You have a most curious year ahead because in many ways, it's filled with contradictions. Many of you will start to dismantle much of what you have created since 1999. It's inevitable. Of course, you're not letting everything go, you're just letting go of what is no longer relevant in your life. This might sound like a bummer because it smacks of loss. But this kind of loss is actually a "lightening up" because you're really only letting go of what you no longer need. It's baggage! Meanwhile, in another part of the forest, this is going to be one of the most flirtatious, fun-loving, romantic, pleasurable years you've had in more than a decade! Romance will be hot. Vacations are promising. Anything to do with sports will be joyful and rewarding. Children will be a source of joy, pride and satisfaction. And you'll be relieved to have the luxury of just being who you are without fear or apology. "I yam what I yam!"

Your Illustrious Job and Reputation

You busted your buns in the mid-90s showing the world what you could do and, by 1999, you stepped out into the world. From that point, you slowly gained confidence and recognition until 2005-07, when you felt on top of your game.

This year, your ambition is aroused because fiery Mars is at the top of your chart for the longest it's been there in 15 years. You're fired up with ambition! You'll work extremely hard to achieve what you want this year. However, you won't be micromanaged! (Easy does, it. Calm down. I'm only pointing out the obvious.) You want to be your own boss. (Well, it's a no-brainer that this could create conflict with whomever your boss is - ya think?)

One thing is certain: Your job opportunities will improve wonderfully if you work in the arts, the entertainment world, the hospitality industry, sports, or anything with teaching or working with children. Carrrrumba!

This is the kind of year that artists, writers, and artisans have been waiting for because you're in touch with your creative power. You've got your muse on speed dial!

Money - The Second Most Important Thing

I think you can earn more money this year. A positive influence is at play throughout all of 2010, and it's similar to something that occurred in 1998 and 1986. Certainly, financial speculation looks better than it has in more than a decade! This positive influence for investments and speculation will continue into 2011. Naturally, investments have to be careful and wise. Nothing is a guarantee but Lady Luck is smiling on you this year! Artists will be particularly fortunate in getting recognition or making money from whatever they create. (Dontcha love that applause?)

Another factor that affects your earnings is your self-assurance is growing in a positive way this year. No question! (You'll be swaggering.) Since all the world loves a winner, nothing succeeds like the appearance of success. Your personality, confidence, and charisma could land you a better job, a better deal, or a better offer that ultimately boosts your income.

Finally, some of you will also be cutting your costs, which has the same effect as increasing your earnings. By reducing expenditures, you'll free up money for frills like bread and rent.

Heartthrob Moments

This is one of the best years for fun and romance that you've had in more than a decade! In this respect, Scorpio really cleans up in 2010. Expect a year of parties, theatrical outings, sports events, social schmoozing, playful activities with children, and a vacation!

New relationships and romantic connections that begin now will be with someone richer, more experienced, more worldly, and possibly older. Without question, all your relationships will improve tremendously this year.

Others will travel and meet lovers on vacation, or in different countries. You will easily fall for somebody from another culture or different background. Likely, their culture differences are part of their romantic appeal. Could this be your chance to learn the flamenco or the tango? Rose in the teeth, the works. Ole!

Home Suite Home

Because your relationships with children improve in 2010, this is a fortuitous year for Scorpio parents. In fact, this wonderful blessing continues into the first half of 2011. (I hear a collective sigh of relief.)

Another lovely blessing is the fact that it's practically a guarantee you'll take a vacation this year. This might include family members; if so, it will be a wonderful, joyful experience. However, you might need to get away from your family! If so, it will be a wonderful, joyful experience. You can't lose.

Real-estate speculation is excellent this year. Furthermore, any improvements to your home, renovations or remodelling, or major purchases will turn out to be a wise financial decision later down the road.

Your Inner Wah

Ironically, even though 2010 promises fun, vacations, romance, pleasure, parties, and great seats at your favourite game, ironically, this is actually a serious time in your life. Events will occur that prompt a lot of soul-searching. For one thing, important elements in your life are going to start to pass away. You'll be giving up things you've outgrown, or no longer need. If you understand this, it will be a smooth process. If you try to hold on to something that you no longer need, it will be stressful.

Many things in your life are coming to a close now. Because of this, you'll start to feel pressure in certain areas. Examine these areas because this is likely where your change will occur. It's time to cut your losses. It's also a time of letting go of prejudices, outmoded attitudes, and beliefs that have no validity. (A prejudice is just being down on something you're not up on.)

My Scorpio Mantra for 2010

"I'm partying with romance, enjoying vacations, loving children, and expressing my creativity!"

Mercury Retrograde in 2010

These are poor times to buy cars, trucks, bikes, computers, printers and phones. Expect delays, lost items and confused communications! Best to finish things, not begin them. [Please note: the dates below are the actual dates of the direction that Mercury is moving (relative to planet Earth). However, Mercury slows down before it actually goes retrograde and, likewise, it takes a while to get back up to speed afterwards as well. Therefore, my warnings in my columns will always allow for these buffer times on either side of these dates.]
