2010: A time of Testing for Civil Liberties

This year, three changes in the heavens portend a conflict in society. We're talking about Pluto, Uranus, and Saturn. Roughly at this time, all three are making a shift from one sign to another.

Pluto takes 250 years to go through all 12 signs. (Yikes!) Pluto represents the impulse to tear things down to make them better: refinish furniture, renovate a house, destroy a nation to rebuild it.

(Sidebar: I don't believe the planets are actually causal. How could they be? But it's easier to speak as if they are. To me, astrology is a patterning of knowledge, a language for us to "read." The planets simply yield information about what is happening: as above, so below.)

Pluto rules nations. And right now, for the first time in 250 years, Pluto is at the beginning of its journey though Capricorn, the sign that rules governments. The last time it was in Capricorn was from 1763 to 1778 when the American Revolution culminated in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Now Pluto is back in Capricorn. Specifically, it returned in November 2008, when the election of the first black president of the United States stunned the world.

Uranus represents a "pushing boundaries" drive for freedom. The last time Pluto in Capricorn occurred at the same time as Uranus was in Aries, was 1760-1767. (That was when the battle that brought Canada under British rule happened.)

Meanwhile, here come de judge! Every 30 years, Saturn has a two-year stint in Libra. Saturn rules the courts, and Libra rules the law. The last time Saturn was in Libra was 1980-83, a time of economic recession and inflation.

So here we are.

Capricorn's desire for efficiency and order will encourage laws that restrict the freedom of the individual so that governments can efficiently deal with the masses. (Its impulse will be to install a computer chip with ID and a GPS in the heel of every newborn.) "Then we know who everyone is, and where they are!" Naturally, this flies in the face of Uranus' drive for individual freedom.

In the coming decade, struggles will ensue. Pluto in Capricorn will try to get everyone so tidily organized, we're rank-and-file. Meanwhile, revolutionary impulses will fight conservative values that threaten individual civil liberties, and Saturn in Libra will weigh the "fairness" of each case.

There is a move to world order.

(I'm going to clean my bedroom closet.)

Hello 2010!

Sometimes life is just a blur (like the first 20 years raising kids), but other times, life has definite signposts. This year will be one of them. To begin with, during the first half of this year, fiery Mars is in your sign, which is rare. In a normal cycle, Mars visits your sign once every two years and stays for about six weeks. But currently, Mars is in Leo for eight months! Shee! The last time it was in Leo this long was 1962-63. (It also had a long stay in 1994-95.) This is like having a vitamin B12 shot twice a week. Mars rules your aggression, your assertiveness, and your muscles. You've got energy to burn! And because you have this increased sustained energy, in your usual Leo style you're going to move mountains. We're talking biiiig changes. These changes will manifest where you live, where you work, and in your relationships with others. They might even hit your pocketbook. Since this is a rare event that benefits you, make the most of it. Adopt a positive attitude. Be resolute. Floss every day. Return your empties.

Your Illustrious Job and Reputation

Around 1999-2000, you were pleased with your accomplishments. Opportunities to travel as well as to explore higher education, publishing, the media, medicine and the law abounded. You were looking good! However, around 2005, the details of your sandbox changed. (Who left these Tonka toys?) Actually, if you look back, you'll see you started to create a new identity for yourself. You might have changed your wardrobe, your weight, your hairstyle. All of this is because you were now heading in a new direction. The ultimate culmination of this momentum is likely a job change this year (or next year for later Leos). If you think back to around 1981-83, a similar influence was at play. You might not plan a job change but it will probably happen. People are impressed with your energy levels and your ability to fight for your beliefs. You're so dazzling and vigorous right now, you leave people slack-jawed. "Who was that masked man?"

Money - The Second Most Important Thing

Whether or not you boost your earnings this year, it's up to you. However, because Mars is in your sign for so long (see above) and it energizes you and makes you ambitious, for many, this translates into greater earnings. However, lots of Leos will use this fiery drive to blaze new trails into new jobs and new professions.

When it comes to cash, assets, and gifts, one thing is certain: The year 2010 will be extremely supportive to you in terms of money coming to you from others. You can expect inheritances, money back from the government, extended credit, or a reduction in debt. Some of you will benefit indirectly because your partner will get a bonus or earn more money. Others will benefit by an increased budget, or new equipment, or getting the practical support you need for your job. The universe has your back this year. You're rowing with the tide. (Just make sure both oars are in the water.)

Heartthrob Moments

The fact that fiery Mars is in your sign for so long definitely affects your sexual desires. Mars is the planet most closely connected to passion and sex. To put it mildly, you're turned on! (Maybe you don't even know it.) This is a year for hot sex! Not only is Mars amping your sex drive but lucky Jupiter, the planet of increase and magnification, is sitting for a whole year in your House of Sex! (I don't make this stuff up.) Yes, we all have a House of Sex, although sometimes it's foreclosed. This won't be like 1995 or 2007. Those were years of romance and playfulness. This year you're in lust. (You're not too fussy. English is not even a requirement.) Actually, the planetary vibes promote sex with imagination. (There's a second -hand copy of the Kama Sutra on Amazon that's cheap like borscht.) Think tantra, incense, candles, silk scarves - forget the Great Dane.

Home Suite Home

You have such flair and dazzle, people think you're a dramatic extrovert. "Where's the party?" In truth, you're quite serious, but you're also fun-loving and romantic. One area you always take seriously is home and family. You're loyal to family, and your home is your castle. (And guess who's the ruler?) Actually, this is one reason this year is a pivotal year. Many Leos will have a residential change this year or next. Your daily milieu will be transformed. (Of course, this could be due to changing job conditions.) Many will have changes with both job and residence. Back in 2003-05, some of you went through a change because you gave up something: a home, possessions, or a relationship. This change will be less a loss and more just a shift that broadens your world. The good news is you'll feel richer at home, more affluent, and happier. Your home scene might expand with the addition of family members. Certainly, relations with family will be more joyful!

Your Inner Wah

Because this is a pivotal year in practical terms, this will also be a pivotal year spiritually speaking. Something will occur that pulls you up short and makes you think. One of life's reality moments. It might even be a "conversion experience" for some. You might fervently embrace an ideology, or a religion, or a hair product, especially if it promises miracles. Many of you will explore hidden knowledge, the occult, ancient texts, or mystical literature. ("Is that a 33rd-degree double serpent? Omigawd!") Other Leos will discover that being perfectly well-dressed is similar to religious contentment. (Sheer joy.) Many will discover the satisfaction of practicing generosity this year.

My Leo Mantra for 2010

I'm using my energy for the highest good because it makes my life better.

Mercury Retrograde in 2010

These are poor times to buy cars, trucks, bikes, computers, printers and phones. Expect delays, lost items and confused communications! Best to finish things, not begin them. [Please note: the dates below are the actual dates of the direction that Mercury is moving (relative to planet Earth). However, Mercury slows down before it actually goes retrograde and, likewise, it takes a while to get back up to speed afterwards as well. Therefore, my warnings in my columns will always allow for these buffer times on either side of these dates.]
