2010: A time of Testing for Civil Liberties

This year, three changes in the heavens portend a conflict in society. We're talking about Pluto, Uranus, and Saturn. Roughly at this time, all three are making a shift from one sign to another.

Pluto takes 250 years to go through all 12 signs. (Yikes!) Pluto represents the impulse to tear things down to make them better: refinish furniture, renovate a house, destroy a nation to rebuild it.

(Sidebar: I don't believe the planets are actually causal. How could they be? But it's easier to speak as if they are. To me, astrology is a patterning of knowledge, a language for us to "read." The planets simply yield information about what is happening: as above, so below.)

Pluto rules nations. And right now, for the first time in 250 years, Pluto is at the beginning of its journey though Capricorn, the sign that rules governments. The last time it was in Capricorn was from 1763 to 1778 when the American Revolution culminated in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Now Pluto is back in Capricorn. Specifically, it returned in November 2008, when the election of the first black president of the United States stunned the world.

Uranus represents a "pushing boundaries" drive for freedom. The last time Pluto in Capricorn occurred at the same time as Uranus was in Aries, was 1760-1767. (That was when the battle that brought Canada under British rule happened.)

Meanwhile, here come de judge! Every 30 years, Saturn has a two-year stint in Libra. Saturn rules the courts, and Libra rules the law. The last time Saturn was in Libra was 1980-83, a time of economic recession and inflation.

So here we are.

Capricorn's desire for efficiency and order will encourage laws that restrict the freedom of the individual so that governments can efficiently deal with the masses. (Its impulse will be to install a computer chip with ID and a GPS in the heel of every newborn.) "Then we know who everyone is, and where they are!" Naturally, this flies in the face of Uranus' drive for individual freedom.

In the coming decade, struggles will ensue. Pluto in Capricorn will try to get everyone so tidily organized, we're rank-and-file. Meanwhile, revolutionary impulses will fight conservative values that threaten individual civil liberties, and Saturn in Libra will weigh the "fairness" of each case.

There is a move to world order.

(I'm going to clean my bedroom closet.)

Hello 2010!

Good news! Lucky moneybags Jupiter is in a Water Sign this year bringing you blessings and good fortune because you're a fellow Water Sign. (It's a vibration thang.) This influence brings travel opportunities and a chance to explore further education. (Great year to go to get training or higher education.) The last time this lovely influence happened was 1998. However, you might be tempted to go overboard this year (not usually your style). Basically, whatever you do, the trick will be to know when to stop. Because you're the most tenacious sign in the zodiac, letting go isn't easy for you, although you did let go of things around 2001-04. Shee! That was inevitable. Fortunately, from August 2001 to August 2002, Jupiter was in your own sign, which was a nice cushion. (And I don't mean whoopie.) This will be an easier year for you.

Your Illustrious Job and Reputation

Remember how successful you felt around 1996-98? Not only did you shine, but others were helpful to you as well. It was all good! However, since 2003, it's been a new ball game. In fact, residential moves and job changes in the last few years have been a challenge. Unlike Gemini, you don't welcome change. You like what is familiar. ("This meatloaf is almost as good as my Mom's.")

The most significant thing that will impact your job and career this year is your own prodigious efforts. You're going to work very hard to earn more money. Since you will probably be travelling more, or paying out money for education, this will be one possible incentive, among others.

Your creative potential is extremely strong this year, along with an increased self-confidence and a feeling that you can do anything. Say no more! This year is also a pivotal time (similar to the early 80s) when your focus is switching. From here on, your career path will be a steady rise until you achieve recognition for your efforts in 2018-19. Hey, it gets even better later on! (Would I kid you?)

Money - The Second Most Important Thing

This is an excellent year for all your financial matters. You're working hard to earn money and, perhaps because of this, you'll be spending more of it. This is a certainty. Your cash flow is very active. Part of the reason for this is you feel a bit cocky and more confident than usual. This will promote largesse in how you handle your money, and the way you choose to spend it on yourself and others. Another reason your outlay of cash will increase is you identify more strongly with your possessions. (This has already started, have you noticed?) You feel you are what you have. Unfortunately, because of this ego-identification with what you own, you might have disputes with others. (It's hard to lend your car to anyone, especially someone to whom you have given birth!)

Heartthrob Moments

By nature, Cancer is not a traveller. You tend to travel for a reason - business or family. Nevertheless, since this is a year where you will travel more than usual, many of you will strike up a romance with someone from another country or a different culture. You might also meet someone at a college or university, or in the field of publishing, the media, the law, and medicine. ("It's cute. We're both nurses.") However, early Cancers (born in June) will start to undergo a major transformation with significant others. This includes professional partnerships as well as your main squeeze. This could be a time of crisis. (Groan.) Long-hidden tensions will now surface. Power struggles are likely. In fact, powerful people that you meet might change your life forever. (Forever is a pretty long time for those of you under 95.)

Home Suite Home

Your sense of humour will improve this year and for you, that's really saying something because you're a natural comedian. A sense of humour goes a long way to promoting harmony at home. ("Mom's a travel agent for guilt trips. Bwah-ha-ha-ha.")

However, in the next 14 years, relationships will be challenged. Majorly! In fact, depending on your birthday, and where it fits into this 14-year span ahead, you could incur major power struggles. The irony is these power struggles might be brought on by yourself because you're determined to improve others or help them. No doubt your intentions are well-meaning. You believe you know what's best for someone. However, the other person will only interpret this as meddling. "Back off!" Similarly, you might incur conflict with a powerful person who has authority over you. Be very careful here. Very careful.

You want a solid home base. Even if you moved in the last few years, in the next two years, you could move again. Your home scene is vitally important because you're a nester. (Older Cancers can hearken back to 1981-83 for hints about previous patterns.) Expect to renovate, repair, and fix up where you live. In addition, significant changes in the family dynamic could occur. (Or maybe you'll just be proud that your parents turned out all right.)

Your Inner Wah

During the next 14 years, you will undergo perhaps the most major transformation of your life. It will have its challenges and its rewards. Your personal ambition will be very high, and this could trigger power struggles with others. Be careful if these are struggles with bosses or people in the government.

The rewarding aspect of this influence is that you'll develop an enormously strong sense of purpose. Your personal ambition will be high and your quality of perseverance will be great. Nevertheless, I advise you to tread carefully. Even if you win a battle, you spend a lot of precious energy doing so. Do you really need this kind of power? Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, but hey, we all need electricity!

My Cancer Mantra for 2010

"I enjoy creating a home for myself and loved ones."

Mercury Retrograde in 2010

These are poor times to buy cars, trucks, bikes, computers, printers and phones. Expect delays, lost items and confused communications! Best to finish things, not begin them. [Please note: the dates below are the actual dates of the direction that Mercury is moving (relative to planet Earth). However, Mercury slows down before it actually goes retrograde and, likewise, it takes a while to get back up to speed afterwards as well. Therefore, my warnings in my columns will always allow for these buffer times on either side of these dates.]
